Synchrotron light of the third and fourth generation — how to fill the generation gap

A critical review of some of the highlights of the Eighth International Conference on Synchrotron Radiation Instrumentation is presented. Contributions attempting to bridge the gap between third and fourth generation synchrotron sources are given particular attention.
