CO{sub}2 v NH{sub}3 A Comparison of Two Systems

The re-introduction of carbon dioxide (CO{sub}2) into the mainstream industrial/commercial refrigeration market is a relatively recent event. Development work was being carried out on CO{sub}2 as long ago as the early 1990s [Ref 1]. However, it was not until the late 1990s that the first operational plants were being designed and installed, for a variety of applications, duties and operating conditions [Refs 2, 3, 4]. The attraction of CO{sub}2 to those who were considering its application was the potential to apply a refrigerant which was both benign, in environmental and human terms, and commercially attractive.
