Dams and dikes - benefits, costs and option assessment

The program prepared for this symposium on the future policy on flood protection and water resource management promises to give us a most interesting and educational day.Ⅰ will start out with an overview and a few statistics on dams and dikes, and a discussion of some of the important aspects of benefits and costs, risk analysis and decision making under uncertainty. Then Ⅰ will reflect on the outcome of the important work of the 2-year World Commission on Dams (WCD), which recently completed its terms of reference and issued its final report. Hopefully, my remarks will serve as a useful framework for the many interesting lectures and discussion periods to follow.
