The new techniques described in this introoudction chapter offer many opportunities for developing faster and more efficient chemical separations and processes using supercritical CO_2 that are environmentally sustainable. Nanomaterials synthesis, catalysis, and chemical manufacturing are some forseeable applications of the supercritical technology for the chemical industry. Remediation of organic and metal pollutants particularly nuclear waste management using supercritical CO_2 as a medium are potentially important for solving many environmental and energy related problems. Selective isolation of agricultural and natural products using supercritical CO_2 may greatly improve methods of processing agricultural products and benefit alternative medicine and health related industries. The chapters presented in this book only represent a few examples in these potential application areas. In summary, supercritical fluid CO_2 with its many unique properties is likely to play an important role in leading us to challenge and develop new technologies that are needed for our societies in the future.
