This presentation discusses thermal insulation as it is used in thermoset molding. The discussion will evolve through the basics of insulation theory to address problems facing molders today. Comparisons will be made between the different materials commonly used showing their advantages and disadvantages. In conclusion, a molding insulation case study of a large manufacturer showing its problems, its needs, the solution chosen and the benefits that were realized will be presented This presentation can be broken up into roughly four parts: 1) A general introduction to Albany International, explaining who we are, what we do, where our technology comes from, and where we get our expertise in thermal insulation. 2) A general discussion on thermal insulation in thermoset molding. This will include an overview of insulation theory, a study of different insulation materials, and will show benefits of insulation. Here, we will discuss the thermal/mechanical requirements in industrial applications and the tradeoffs made to achieve an acceptable balance. 3) A specific study of materials commonly used today in thermoset molding (primarily fiberglass reinforced polyester and calcium silicate), showing their advantages and disadvantages. Our material, Pyropel~R, will be introduced with direct comparisons and explanations of the benefits it brings to molders. 4) The case study. Significant efforts have been made to use data, measurements and photographs wherever possible. Evaluation of the different materials comes from physical testing and evaluation as well as manufacturers' specifications. Throughout the presentation, real life situations are related back to theory. Conducted in 2000, the case study is from a Honeywell thermoset molding facility in Mars Hill, NC.
