The various fields of the application of intelligent active structures for military aircraft are discussed and results from a special detailed investigation of active structure are presented. The detailed investigation deals with heavy structural vibrations which can be observed at wing and vertical tail of high performance aircraft flying at high angles of attack by vortices originating from wing leading edge and from front fuselage/canard. The resulting wing/fin dynamic loads may lead to increased material fatigue. A number of different passive and active concepts have been investigated to minimize the excitation of the wing/fin or to alleviate the resulting structural vibrations. Active system concepts were suggested as an efficient way for active buffet load alleviation.
