The effect of the electrode configuration of dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) reactor on the conversions of CH_4 and CO_2 has been investigated. Two configurations have been applied. The first one is with the high voltage metal electrode covered by the dielectric-barrier material (quartz), while the another one is with the grounded electrode covered by the quartz. Differences both in the Lissajous figures and in the product distribution have been observed, while both reactors can lead to a significantly high conversions. The investigations have suggested a at least two-step plasma methane conversion using DBDs: the first is the initiation of discharge reactions to generate the necessary active species; then the further discharge reactions of such formed species produce the higher hydrocarbons and oxygenates. The future development has also been discussed.
