Effect of the Titanium Dioxide Content on the Interfacial Reactions between Titanium and Zirconia/Titanium Dioxide Composites

The samples were prepared with various content of TiO_2 and 3 mol% Y_2O_3-ZrO_2 at different mole percent, then hot-pressed at 1500°C for 2 hours and reacted with Cp-Ti at 1700°C for 60 minutes. The as-hot-pressed samples and interfacial reaction were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS). The experiment showed that the titanium side will exist Ti_3O_2 metal oxide after the interfacial react between titanium and ceramic bulk with high content TiO_2-phase. If there is high content ZrO_2-phase in the ceramic bulk, the titanium side will dissolved large amount of Zr and O. The brittle Ti_2ZrO precipitated from super-saturated α-Ti(Zr, O) while cooling down. There is also forming (Ti, Zr)_2O metal oxide in the titanium side. Liquid phase can be observed on the sides of ceramics containing TiZrO_4 in the interfacial reaction with titanium that make titanium can diffuse into the inner side of ceramic to react instead of the appearance of reaction-affected zone.
