Electric vehicles are eco-friendly, very efficient, low maintenance vehicles. They are energy efficient in short distance travels. This paper presents a real-time digital control scheme for speed control of switched reluctance motor (SRM), battery charge indication and speed indication for a battery operated vehicle. It is designed to operate with minimum number of switching devices in the converter circuit. It makes use of rotor position signals and speed signal, in the closed loop feedback control of the motor. The proposed scheme is useful for low power rating motor and for vehicle speed rating up to 60kmph. Use of off-the-shelf electronic components makes the controller simple, reliable, and economical. The testing is being done for a vehicle which runs on a Switched Reluctance motor of 1.2HP, 4-phase, 1500rpm which has 8 poles on stator and 6 poles on rotor and the voltage and current ratings being 72V and 12.5A respectively.
