Modeling the Population-Level Impact of an HIV Microbicide in a Generalized HIV Epidemic with a Pair-Formation Sexual Partnership Model

Although HIV microbicides are in the development stage, they represent a potentially very important method by which women might discreetly reduce their risk of HIV infection and/or transmission to their partners. We used a pair-formation epidemic model with HIV microbicide effects to represent a population currently experiencing a generalized HIV epidemic. We examined the potential impact of HIV microbicides by varying different model parameters regarding HIV microbicide use: 1) effectiveness levels of HIV microbicide, 2) amount of HIV microbicide available, and 3) proportion of women that will adopt this method.
