SUBMARINE DOCK DESIGN AT DEVONPORT ROYAL DOCKYARD

In February 2002, on the original agreed date, set at the award of contract in 1997, HMS Vanguard arrived at the breakwater in Plymouth before commencing her refit in the new facilities provided for that purpose at 9 Dock. It was a remarkable achievement in view of the complexities which unfolded as the upgrade works to the docks and ancillary Facilities were undertaken within an operational dockyard. In the shadow of 9 Dock, which rightly took the lime-light, significant other works just as complex and challenging were being undertaken to upgrade the two existing nuclear docks within the Submarine Refit Complex as well as providing ancillary facilities (Nuclear Workshops, New and Used Fuel Storage and Handling Facilities and a new railway system).
