This paper studies the influence of external damping on nonlinear vibrations for a dynamic system with piecewise linear stiffness. The effect of external damping on chaos and multiple period vibrations is discussed through both of the simulation and experiment. The investigation is based on frequency response, time response, bifurcation diagram, FFT, phase plane diagram and Poincare map. The results show that external damping has an expected tendency to suppress chaos and multiple periods in the majority cases, but for some conditions, the frequency region where chaos occurs becomes wider as damping increases.
