A solar-powered air-conditioning system using heat-pipe evacuated tube collectors with cooling capacity of 360 kW was designed and constructed for an office building in Beijing, China. The heat-pipe evacuated tube collector was developed by the Beijing Solar Energy Research Institute and manufactured by the Beijing SUNDA Solar Energy Technology Co., Ltd. The solar collector array has a total aperture area of 680m~2. Solar collectors supply hot water at about 88 °C to a lithium-bromide absorption chiller made in China. After measuring, COP of the absorption chiller is around 0.75. In order to reduce heat losses of storage tank, both hot-water storage tank and chilled-water storage tank are adopted. The system has been successfully operated and practically applied since 2004. The system possesses a bi-function of space cooling in summer and space heating in winter. Practical operating results showed that during space-cooling period, the average collector efficiency reached 45.1% and the average solar fraction was about 82.2%; during space-heating period, the average collector efficiency reached 42.2% and the average solar fraction was about 70.0%. It means that the solar air-conditioning system could meet most of space cooling and space heating requirements of the office building.
