The EUMETNET SWSS II project studied 13 ice-free anemometers at three European test sites prone to strong in-cloud icing. The heavily heated (700 W) Rosemount Pitot tube sensor remained ice-free at all sites. Also the Thies 2D (70W) and Metek 3D (125 W and 55 W) acoustic anemometers functioned well under these harsh environments. Among traditional cup anemometers, the Vaisala WAA25 (50+22 W) and at less extend, Degreane Deolia (70 to 140 W) proved to be quite usable even at heavy icing sites. The hot film anemometers tested remained well ice-free, but suffered of super-cooled cloud droplets associated with vertical winds. The test showed that ice-free sensors with relatively low heating power for harsh conditions are available. On the other side some sensors proved to have inadequate heating design/power, at least for such sites.
