An electrical synchronous machine is designed with a damping coil that is located in grooves or holes in the pole shoes. The poles (1) of the machine carry the exciter winding (2) and the clamping winding (3). The middle coils (4) of the winding are located within grooves in the pole shoes (5). The outer coils (6) are located in projecting strips (7) from the pole shoes, such that are large section of the coils lie in air. The coil is in this way subjected to air cooling, while being rigidly supported against centrifugal forces.
