Participation of wind energy in electricity markets with a short term wind power prediction tool

One of the characteristics of wind energy, from the grid point of view, is its non-dispatchability. This fact makes that integration in electrical networks may find some difficulties. Short term wind power prediction tools could make this integration easier, either by their use by the grid System Operator, or by promoting the participation of wind farms in the electricity markets and using this tools to make their bids in the market. In this paper, the importance of a short term wind power prediction tool for the participation of wind energy systems in electricity markets is studied. Simulations have been performed to the production of different wind farms, with different degrees of accuracy in the prediction tool. The simulations have been performed using the rules of the Spanish electricity market and the results are commented. It can be concluded that participation in electricity markets with a short term wind power prediction tool of average accuracy is possible and would produce benefits for the system. This would allow a higher amount of wind energy systems connected to the grids.
