Hydrogen bonds play an important role in crystalline cellulose’s stability. However, crystalline cellulose bioconversion is partly inefficient due to the deleterious impact of cellulose multiple hydrogen bonds on enzymatic accessibility. The type of hydrogen bond (interchain and intrachain hydrogen bond) and the total number of hydrogen bond differ a lot among different cellulose allomorphs. However, there was no systematic report about hydrogen bond network of different crystalline celluloses. Thus, in this study, the hydrogen bond network of crystalline cellulose I, II, III was investigated through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The relationship between hydrogen bond network and cellulose enzymatic digestibility was studied.
