Ferromagnetism in fullerenes -a manifestation of carbon magnetism

The discovery of the polymerization phenomenon has initiated a new research field: the preparation and studies of polymerized fullerene states. Fullerenes, polymerized by the light or electron beam exposure, or by applying high pressure and high temperature show ferromagnetic behavior. Observation of magnetic domains in variously polymerized fullerenes has given conclusive proof for the intrinsic nature of the ferromagnetic signal. A comparative structural study of fullerenes polymerized by different methods suggests that ferromagnetism in polymerized fullerenes is an example of more universal phenomenon: ferromagnetism in pure carbon structures.
