The drive for increased fuel economy and reduced emissions has led to creation of innovative belt-driven starter/generator stop-start system solutions. The primary elements of the system solutions needed to be high value, packaging compatible with current vehicle architecture, maintain high efficiency to minimize energy losses, and achieve high performance (function and durability) This paper provides a brief overview of advanced powertrain systems to identify the logic of belt-driven solutions versus competing technologies, the technical challenges of belt-driven systems, an evaluation of solutions and competing technologies, and the benefits and business opportunities for the future. Electro-mechanical drive (EMD) system solutions now exist to support 14/42-volt systems for vehicle start, stop, and boost requirements. The belt-driven solutions offer the performance capabilities for increased fuel economy, reduced emissions, and vehicle boost without any compromise in overall vehicle cost, packaging, durability, and reliability.
