Longitudinal Empirical Research: Using Case Studies To Determine The Impact of Economic and Political Change on Business in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE)

Empirical research is one of the oldest forms of research; case research has been used for decades in business schools. Case studies enable researchers to form robust models of business behaviour that can be tested by additional case or other research. When the external environment that forms the backdrop for business decision-making is changing rapidly, single case observations are inadequate to gain insights into business situations. Such is the case with the rapid changes in political and economic conditions in Central and Eastern Europe since 1990. In this situation longitudinal case studies are useful to capture business responses to the changing environment. The authors discuss the implications and problems inherent in the research.
