A new method is proposed for the solvent extraction separation and Spectrophotometric determination of palladium(II) with 5-methyl-3-oximino-hexan-2-one-phenylhydrazone (HMOHOP). Various experimental parameters such as pH, effect of solvents, reagent concentration, equilibration time, stability etc. have been extensively studied and optimised. Pd(II) was quantitatively extracted in the pH range 1.1 - 4.3. The yellow coloured, 1:2, complex which can be extracted into methylisobutylketone exhibits an absorption maximum at 450 nm. The system obeys Beer's law in the concentration range 0.4 -1 2.0 μg/ ml of Pd(II). The molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity of the system were found to be 8.24 x 10~3 l/ mol/ cm and 12.9 ng/ cm~2 respectively. Effect of various foreign ions on the extraction and determination of Pd(II) with HMOHOP was studied. The method was satisfactorily applied for the determination of Pd(II) in synthetic mixtures and some real samples.
