The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of River Protection has commissioned the design, construction and demonstration of the world's largest waste immobilization plant at the Hanford site - the waste treatment and immobilization plant (WTP). At this plant, high-level tank waste (HLW) will be separated to generate a low-activity waste (LAW) and a HLW fraction that will be separately vitrified. The HLW and LAW melters are required to be larger and have significantly higher throughput than any previously used U.S. HLW glass melter. Therefore, significant design improvements must be developed and tested. The ongoing testing and demonstration programs for WTP melters are presented in this paper.
