Three dimensional modelling approach for the order picking problem in an highly automated warehouse

Order picking as a classical operation research problem is often worked out with heuristic algorithms. In the paper the classical approach is extended by developing a discrete-event simulation model, based on a three dimensional representation of the real system. Implementing in the model the heuristic algorithms it is possible to globally test the heuristics goodness with respect to some performance indicators not considered by classical approaches. Furthermore, 3-D animation provides virtual reality modelling benefits and improves troubleshooting.
