Maximizing the Usage of Automated DFx in the EMS Industry

Automated DFx analysis is well known in the electronics industry, especially for PCB design and fabrication. Automated DFx analysis has become more prevalent with the onset of more advanced CAM tools and the addition of 3-dimensional capabilities. Time to market is incredibly important in today's ultra-competitive high technology product arena, and accurate fast DFx feedback is critical in order to meet an OEM customer's schedules. Feedback given at the correct stage in the process can generate significant manufacturing cost savings, preserve schedule integrity, and enhance the probability of changes being adopted. Automated systems can impact many aspects of an early design: assembly, testability, fabrication, and supply chain. More system functionality brings better 'virtual' prototyping and uncovers issues normally not detected until a true 3-dimensional prototype is built and tested. This paper will detail the work done to determine the value of an automated DFx system to an EMS contractor and their respective customers. Of the many aspects of DFx we have investigated assembly, fabrication, testability, and padstack verification. It will examine the methodology used to enhance ar automated DFx system's capability, and improve the turn-around-time and accuracy of DFx feedback.
