This paper will explore methods to understand and control the spray-fluxing portion of the wave soldering machine. Design of Experiments techniques will be used to establish the impact of various process parameters upon the spray fluxer's performance. Metrics that will be used in the spray fluxer optimization will include the volume and variation in flux deposition over a controlled area and the variation in flux penetration through holes in a circuit board. Once the spray fluxing portion of the wave soldering operation is understood, its performance over time with respect to a subset of the metrics listed above will be monitored and controlled using Statistical Process Control.
