An increasing number of detection problems is expected because of the increasing number of large wind energy plants in the surroundings of air defence radar systems. EADS is involved in the planning of various projects for wind energy plants and industrial buildings in the sphere of influence of civilian radar systems and military air defence systems. In this context, different computational methods and analyses are applied to determine and subsequently to avoid the causes of local detection gaps over azimuth and range. Analysis on the basis of digital data on terrain and buildings, which distinguish between different types of vegetation and artificial obstacles, show for terrains with differing profiles that, in addition to the influence of the terrain, a very strong influence of the vegetation and the buildings themselves as well as their interaction have to be taken into account. The following examples demonstrate these complex relations.
