An automated glucose concentration controller for insulin-dependent diabetics was synthesized. The model predictive control framework was used due to its ability to incorporate the effects of past manipulated variable moves into the future move decisions. Controller performance was evaluated in simulation by subjecting the diabetic patient to bouts of mild (30 percent VO_2~(max)) and moderate (60 percent VO_2~(max)) exercise. The controller was capable of limiting glucose concentration undershoot towithin 3 mg/dL of the setpoint, while open-loop responses demonstrated >= 10 mg/dL undershoot. As desired, the controller displayed aggressive response to more strenuous exercise while remaining relatively insensitive to mild exercise disturbances.
