Fine particle peening (FPP), where fine particles bombard material surfaces, has been a practical surface modification technology to improve fatigue strength of materials. In addition, FPP provides alternative effects; transfer of shot particle elements onto the substrate [1] as well as formation of periodical surface texture [2]. Such effects of FPP enable a wide range of novel surface modification, including reducing friction [3], improving wear resistance [4] and giving compatibility to tribo-coatings [5]. In order to realize a new viewpoint of FPP, this article overviews material transfer and surface texturing induced by FPP.
