Along with a growing number of total hip replacements (THR), there is a growing need for revision surgeries due to prosthesis failure. The main reason of failure is aseptic loosening or periprosthetic osteolysis. Both are causally linked to prosthetic wear of the articulating surfaces what is reason of release of polyethylene particles to human body. The foreign-body reaction at the cellular level can lead to diseases that also have influence on surface wear. The extend of the PE release effects depends on the size, shape and quantity of the released particles. The total volumetric wear of the PE cups is influenced by a combination of factors such as material combination, roughness of surfaces, inclination in pelvis or lubricant conditions. It can be determined by analyzing the geometrical changes of the cups. One of the options is to analyze the geometrical changes in vitro, on extracted cups.
