Although boundary layer lubrication is of primary importance in most engineering applications, relatively few techniques are available that probe the surface molecular structure of lubricants in situ when the solid surface is in contact with solution. In past, the adsorption structure of oiliness improver, such as oleic acid, was investigated using electron diffraction. However, electron diffraction needs the high vacuum condition. Therefore, it may be said that this method is not an in-situ analysis of a frictional surface. Recently, infrared spectroscopy has been used to probe buried liquid interfaces. However, it is not very surface-specific, because the data includes the information of liquid.
