The 42-V power net migrates slowly and stepwise towards series, due to technical risk minimization of the car manufacturers and the limited availability of 42-V electrical components. However, the 42-V technology has a high potential to become standard on the long run. It will serve comfort functions as well as drive train functions (boost, recuperation) with limited power (10 to 15 kW) typical for mild hybridization. This permits to make use of advanced lead acid batteries first, while Li-ion batteries are the ultimate choice with respect to performance and life cycle cost, and will concomitantly be used with drive train support. Target of that kind of application is fuel economy. 300 V batteries are adaptable to both types of full hybrids: for fuel economy and for added value functions like temporary 4-wheel drive and improved acceleration, which requires more than 20 kW/t of vehicle weight. These performance improvements are extensively experienced by the driver, and therefore help in accepting extra cost. With respect to battery technology, active cooling is needed to meet high dynamic power and cycle life requirements. Compact and safe packaging is another issue to be met.
