By comparing a simple air terminal with different types of ESE devices it is possible to determine the relative advantage and hence efficiency in capturing simulated lightning strikes. Efficiency of interception is important as a lightning strike cannot be safely earthed until it is captured at a preferred point. One specific brand of ESE has been tested at various independent H.V laboratories with results certified by British Standards, Central Laboratory for Electrical Industries ( LCIE France), and Korean Electrotechnology Research Institute (Korea) More recently, tests have been conducted by IREQ (Quebec HV Laboratory) The certified test results conclude: 'The triggering advance of the early streamer emission lightning conductor was determined to be 54 microseconds.'
