Cement-based materials are used in the construction of a wide range of structures. During their service life, many of these structures are exposed to various types of aggression. In many instances, the kinetics of degradation is controlled by the diffusion of ions within the material pore structure. This report is intended to be a modest attempt to review the mechanisms of ionic diffusion in saturated cement systems. Special emphasis is placed on the theoretical aspects of these phenomena. Specific problems related to the numerical modeling of ionic diffusion mechanisms are also discussed.
