As a part of general project on improving the hot tearing resistance of the aerospace casting aluminum alloy A201, this paper focuses the effect of melt treatment, alloying elements, the addition of mischmetal and magnetic field on the hot tearing of a number alloys based on the Al-Cu system. Melt treatments such as degassing, filtering and grain refinement improved the hot tearing resistance marginally. In the case of alloy additions, magnesium was found to be more detrimental to hot tearing than other elements. Mischmetal, improved the hot tearing resistance of Al-Cu-Mg alloy quite significantly. The dendrite coherency temperature of the Al-Cu alloy, determined by the thermal analysis method, was found to be unaffected by the minor alloy additions. A magnetic field marginally increased the hot tearing tendency of the alloy.
