Steel castings were made in sand molds with various binders and coatings to study the effect of mold atmosphere on chemical penetration. The atmosphere at the mold-metal interface and the extent of chemical penetration depended strongly on thee carbon and moisture content of the mold. Chemical penetration occurred on most castings but was usually prevented with mold coatings. Experiments showed that steel can suffer chemical penetration after solidification but it is easily removed. A combined heat and mass transfer model for the steel and mold was developed. It correctly predicted the atmosphere for a green sand mold without seacoal addition and the occurrence of chemical penetration early in the casting and later after solidification.
