A Microview of Some Factors That Impact Cast Iron (Or The Little Things That Mean A Lot)

A career of cast iron metallurgy has provided a unique perspective of factors that significantly affect cast iron quality. To an outsider, many of these factors would have no significance whatsoever, but seeing the world through a microscope can focus attention on microscopic issues that have had a macroscopic impact on the cast iron world. Micro views of structures, inoculation, voids, magnesium treatment, and other issues are described. The relationship of these issues as they are understood now and how they will impact the future is discussed.
