The percentage porosities of two A356 permanent mold castings were evaluated using image analysis and pyknometry. The uncertainty of the image analysis method is examined in depth using a Gaussian uncertainty-analysis model, and the uncertainty of each of the percentage porosity calculations determined. The results of each method are compared. Based on this model, the results from the image analysis and the results from the pyknometry analysis agree. While the uncertainties in both methods are large, the uncertainties of the image analysis results are much higher than those of the pyknometry results. The reason for the large image analysis uncertainties and possible solutions are discussed.
