Virgin Trains will introduce the first tilting trains for service operations on Railtrack Infrastructure in 2002. The tilting system enables the tilting train to travel around curves at a faster speed than non-tilting trains, providing reduced journey times whilst ensuring passenger comfort. Until recently, no Railway Group Standards existed for tilting train operations. This paper describes why two new Railway Group Standards have mandated systems for speed supervision and tilt management. It provides a summary of the control measures within the Standards and the advice provided to the rail industry on how to meet the requirements of the Standards, through a Railtrack Approved Code of Practice (RACOP). Also provided is a brief description of the TASS System that will be used by Railtrack and Virgin Trains to meet the requirements of the Group Standards.
