As electronics assembly equipment and process technology matures and stabilizes, manufacturing enterprises seek new means to improve their profitability and competitive advantage. No longer can new machine systems or process chemicals give a factory a market edge or significant cost reduction. In the 21st century, manufacturing leaders will distinguish themselves through rapid and efficient management of process and product information. Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) software has been evolving for more than a decade in the electronics assembly industry. The technology began as a means to program assembly and test machines via electronic CAD and BOM data. The drivers for this technology were machine programming speed, and the quality and accuracy of the resultant programs. From this foundation, CIM applications in the factory expanded into automation of assembly and inspection documentation, paperless viewing and repair, quality data collection, and various forms of assembly planning and optimization.
