Electrochemical reduction of 2-(1-hydroxy-3-butenyl)halobenzenes in the presence of 2-4 equivalents of phenathrene in a one-compartment cell equipped with a Pt cathode and Mg anode gave the corresponding radical-cyclization products in 68-80% yields. This electrochemical cyclization could be applied to a synthesis of dihydrobenzofurans by using allyl 2-iodophenyl ethers as a starting substrate.
