Rod-coil block copolymers (RCP) are attracting increasing attention as their anisotropic aggregation leads to the formation of supramolecular structures on the nanometer-scale. The rigid segments of RCP typically consist of mesogens that drive self-assembly via nonspecific π-π interactions, or, via the formation of helical structures. Of particular interest are low molecular weight polymeric or oligomeric building blocks since they provide access to phase-separated morphologies with domain sizes that can not be obtained with traditional coil-coil block copolymers. Up to now, a variety of structures have been reported in which the rod segment is attached to a flexible solubilising polymer chain. Depending on the rod structure mushroom-shaped aggregates, ribbons and supramolecular rod bundles have been observed and even applied as supramolecular reactors.
