Analysis of Combustion Chamber Deposits by ESI-TOF-MS and MALDI-TOF-MS: Evidence of Thermal Degradation of Polymeric Gasoline Additives

Combustion chamber deposits (CCD) from a GM 3800 engine were examined by ESI-TOF-MS and MALDI-TOF-MS. The CCD were first soxhlet extracted, then the soluble portion was further separated on a silica gel column yielding a methylene chloride soluble fraction, accounting for approximately 10% of the total deposit.
