Growth of Anionic Micelles in Polymer Solutions and Hydrogels

There is interest in creating nanoporous hydrogels using micelles as templates which could be used as separation or drug delivery materials. In order to understand the templating mechanism, it is necessary to compare the resultant pores to the original templates with respect to size and shape as micelle structure depends on the solution thermodynamics. For this aim, we synthesized poly(2- (dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA), which is a water- soluble, and chemically crosslinkable polymer. Deuterated sodium dodecylsulfate (d-SDS) was used as surfactant to provide contrast for small angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments. SANS of PDMAEMA/d-SDS solutions and the corresponding hydrogels in water was measured to investigate the structure of the micelles. In an attempt to control micelle structure in PDMAEMA hydrogels, the degree of quaternization of PDMAEMA was varied, and the effect of the degree of quaternization on the micellization was investigated.
