The search for techniques for the modification of the surfaces of inorganic substrates is a highly pursued area in materials research since many years (1,2). One technique (3-8) uses monolayers of polymerizable compounds that are deposited on the surface and these groups are then incorporated into a polymer during a subsequent solution-borne polymerization (Fig. 1). Despite its obvious simplicity this technique has not received equal attention within the scientific community as compared to protocols such as grafting-to techniques or surface-initiated polymerizations.
