High throughput screening, cell-based assays and biotech drug production are processes that in need of novel cell culture systems improving both yield and quality.Most studies in the literature, however, were conducted with cancer cells grown in 2D on plastic surfaces. Their major limitations are poor cell viability and cell phenotype change, related to modified protein synthesis in response to material surface. Cancer cells are highly variable in their gene expression profiles and cellular behavior that are easily modulated by extracellular microenvironment and culture conditions.
