There has been significant recent interest in the incorporation of transition metal atoms into polymer frameworks, because the metal may imbue the polymer with specific optical, electronic, magnetic, catalytic, and other properties. Incorporation of polymetallic “cluster” species would be expected to result in enhancement of these properties or possibly even fundamentally new behavior, but thus far there is a dearth of robust cluster-containing polymers – the vast majority of extant examples involve cluster-polymer attachment via P- or N-ligands, a readily-dissociable coordination that results in cluster-containing polymer break-down. We report herein our studies examining cluster incorporation into polymer main-chains by functionalized cyclopentadienyl and/or alkyne ligands, amongst the strongest cluster-coordinating ligands, together with preliminary studies assessing the optical limiting merit of these cluster-containing systems.
