Functional polymers are attractive materials not only for basic research but also in various industrial applications.The availability of strategically placed functional groups facilitates covalent pro-drug attachment as well as other functionalizations.By derivatization of the pendant functional groups,variations in hydrophilicity,physical properties and biodegradability can be achieved.[L]-Poly(lactic acid)([L]-PLA)based materials have gained wide acceptability for applications that require bioresorption in-vivo 1,2.Polyesters with pendant carboxylic and amino functional groups,such as poly(malic acid)3 and poly([L]-serine ester),respectively,are known.The decoration of biopolymer chains to facilitate the attachment of various bioactive substances is recognized as being important in tissue engineering applications.5 Our laboratory has been studying the introduction of functional entities into bioresorbable homo-and
