FORECAST OF DEVELOPMENT OF GRAIN PROCESSING INDUSTRY IN CHINA

This paper analyzes the current situation of grain production in the world and describes in particular the development trend of Chinese grain processing industry in the new century. Cereal food is the basic food that mankind depends on for existence and development. With the continuous growth in world population, every country in the world pays great attention to grain production so as to meet mankind's basic demand for grain. Table 1 shows the total amount and per unit area yield of grain in the world as distributed per continent in 1999. According to the overall current pattern of the world's grain production, about 500 million tons of grain are produced annually in South and North America, with a per capita out put of 625 kg; about 400 million tons are produced per year in Europe, with a per capita out put of 570 kg; more than 30 million tons are produced per year in Oceania, with a per capita out put of over 1000 kg. Asia is the most populous area in the world with a population of 3 billion. More than 1 billion tons of grain is produced annually in Asia with an average possession of 330 kg as per capita grain in the world; only about 100 million tons of grain is produced annually in Africa with a per capita out put of less than 200kg. These facts clearly demonstrate the reasons for the imbalance in gross out put, per unit area yield and per capita occupancy of grain production in different continents. It is crystal clear that the different grain production categories are much higher in developed than in under developed regions. This serves as one of the principal reasons for the marked differences between the rich and poor regions. The general pattern of grain production in the world fully proves that grain is the important foundation of thenational economy of every nation.
