QUALITY MILK AND QUALITY ASSURANCE IN BIOPHARMING

Biopharming is the production of biological products using transgenic livestock animals or plants ordinarily employed in agriculture. The superb efficiency of lactating dairy animals in the secretion of a protein-rich fluid (milk) that can be collected under very well characterized conditions has made dairy production a very attractive system for biopharming purposes.Just as in the production for food, biopharming requires that milk be of high quality, free of excessive bacterial contamination ("bioburden" in the jargon of pharmaceutical production), free of drug and chemical residues, and manifesting very consistent levels of the protein to be extracted. Milk producing animals must be "qualified" to enter and remain resident in a pharmaceutical-producing herd.
