Seven years have passed since the publication of D'Arcy and Burnett's extremely useful edited volume Barley Yellow Dwarf: 40 years of Progress (D'Arcy and Burnett, 1995). Thus, we are approaching half a century of progress. While an enormous amount ofscience of the most excellent quality has answered many fundamental questions relating to all aspects of the virus and the disease it causes, Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) (including Cereal yellow dwarf virus, or CYDV, throughout this text) is probably as big a problem now as it has ever been. Thus, the heat is on to do something practical about it. Epidemiologists, perhaps with breeders, probably come in for as hot a grilling as anyone in this respect. Their research is "nearer the market" than that of many others, and often depends on industry funding. Fundamental scientific understanding has to be combined with clever technologies in order to produce practical solutions.
